I Shall Not Live in VainA life can be lived in many ways,
Bringing joy or bringing pain. While many hope to save and help the world, Others will destroy and maim. I want to help and cure the world, With little gestures, simple and plain. Something I learned while completing this activity: That Epic Poems are a good way to tell a story, all you need is a few exaggerations. Something I could do next time to improve the quality of my work: Add a few more alliterations. Maria del Carmen, Carolina Joaquina,
Del Perpetuo Socorro, Pérez Lizaur de Berlie. Mexican by birth, Canadian by choice, Eldest of nine siblings, daughter of a great man. Could tame fierce horses at five, caught flying seagulls at ten, Flipped diving sea turtles, explored murky depths. She was a great explorer, seeing much at a young age, France, Belgium and Spain, Israel, Honduras and Egypt, The famed Churchill on the Queen Mary, the Kennedys at cocktails. But none of these riches, could tame her desire, Her heart yearned for India, the land of her dreams. Five dozen years later, on her very birth day, Came a very young faery, twirling, prancing and flying. Her wish she did grant, she was bound to go, The land of many colours, awaited her at long last! Her excitement was immense, bags packed a month early, Did extensive research, reading night after night. On October the eighth, she boarded the plane, Left her family and friends, flying across the whole world. Her work she abandoned, like never before, Blackberry, Bluetooth and briefcase, stowed away for a month. Upon landing in India, just after midnight, She met the terrible monster, Time Lag, a life drainer. Dauntlessly defeated him, after merely a few hours of combat, Never met him again, during the whole week and fortnight. Adding insult to injury, she was always energetic, She even awoke and was ready, long before everyone. During the trip, her head held high, She rode majestic wise elephants, and quick trotting camels. Was hypnotized by cobras, swaying side to side, Searched for dangerous tigers, and giant man-eating birds. She withstood the irresistible pull, the sleep spell of opium, And helped poor people in need, prevailing over evil. When visiting the holiest of cities, Varanasi the sacred, She saw the heaps of refuse, piled all over the city. She vowed to do something, to stop these malevolent demons, Helped Mother Theresa, fought poverty, filth and decay. When leaving her dream land, after twenty-one days, She began to plan and to think, about her next fabulous trip. Where she could find again rest, from the rush of her hectic life, And connect with the Earth, the Sun and her Soul. What is Myth? There is no pure myth is my story, but some of my poem is exaggerated. For example, time lag is no monster that sucks away life, but it does take away your energy. The faery was really her granddaughter dressed as a faery, and poverty, filth and decay are not living demons. Last but not least, the giant man-eating birds are painted storks, with an average wingspan of more than five feet, but they do not eat humans. I used these exaggerations to enhance the grandeur of the story. My learner profile for this activity: Communicator - Balanced In this activity I demonstrated these IB attitudes: Curiosity - Creativity - Independence - Enthusiasm - Confidence After I finished this project I felt eager : To make this dream come true. Something I learned while completing this activity: Dreams can come in many shapes and sizes, and that imagination is endless. Something I could do next time to improve the quality of my work: Make my story more understandable. “Goodnight!” I shout to my family, before going to bed. I lie down and turn off my light, and my closet, desk, shelves and the other things in the room disappear, leaving only darkness, and the sounds of the night. It is those sounds that slowly lullaby me to sleep. * * * I woke up, an undetermined amount of hours later, to the soft glow of morning light. I happily opened my eyes, feeling perfectly rested and refreshed, and stared in disbelief at my room. “What happened?” I wondered. An idea suddenly hit me. As the words “No way...” escaped my mouth, I pinched my arm. I was only half surprised when I felt the pain. As it faded away, I looked around my room and took it all in. The first thing I noticed was the bright green walls of my room. They seemed a bit strange to me, and in my mind I wondered why they weren’t blue as I remembered them to have been. I continued my visual sweep taking note that everything is organized, and in it’s proper place. I also noticed a small fridge in one of the many corners of my room, not unlike some that I’ve seen in some hotels. I rose out of bed and walked to it, its impeccable white surface shining in the light. I opened it to reveal a wide array of my favorite snacks, sitting there as if waiting to be eaten. I could not help myself taking one or two before I realized that I should save my appetite for breakfast. I therefore continued my exploration, a delicious aftertaste in my mouth. I felt the soft carpet under my feet while I was looking around, and realized that I had not looked up yet. I glanced up, wondering what surprise I would get, and couldn’t help gaping. There were hundreds of stars and constellations! I turned off the light, and they all lit up, revealing a beautiful imitation of the night sky. Planets and the moon were also visible, all in their correct places. I spent a few minutes just admiring their beauty. Next, I decided to make my bed, to keep my room as nice as it was. I began, and I noticed a few differences with the bed that I seemed to remember. Firstly, I noticed that all the covers were perfectly tucked in. Curious, I pulled the sheet, and felt more resistance than I had expected. After further examination, I discovered that there were special devices underneath my mattress so that my bed was always perfectly tucked in, just the way I liked it. With this happy discovery in my head, I found a few more special details around my bed. One of these was a set of dials discretely hidden at the top of the bed, within reach of someone in bed. These dials controlled the temperature of my room, so that I could change it to exactly what I wanted. Another was a small drawer in the wall next the to the dials. When opened, it reveals a collection of interesting books and a variety of remotes and video game controllers. Upon seeing these, I looked at the wall to the foot of my bed and saw a large flatscreen TV. I also found that my bed could be pushed up parallel the the wall, and a sofa could take it’s place. I was going to sit down and have a relaxing time, when I noticed a small black line on one of the walls. I walked up to it and I saw that it was actually a crack! I slipped my fingers through and suddenly a part of the wall lifted up, revealing a long corridor, brightly coloured with many different types of doors leading to the left and to the right. It reminded me of a magical corridor in a book that I had read. After exploring the first few rooms, I found that I had a great room for playing road hockey, a small but well equipped exercise room and a big pool complete with waterslides, a Tarzan rope and a wavemaker. The last room that I visited was a great room for doing homework, with a desk and all the supplies I could ever need. I got a final surprise that morning when I heard my Dad saying through a loudspeaker, “Come for breakfast!”. As I ran downstairs to say good morning to my Dad, my whole life came back to me and the bedroom I seemed familiar with was just a dream! As I arrived next to my Dad, I said, “You would never guess the dream I had last night!” |
